The track up Bluff Knoll, Stirling Range National Park, March 2011

Bluff Knoll car park full — what now

Best for: Weekends, school holidays, wildflower season

Plan B when the Bluff Knoll mountain car park is full: Drive lookouts, trailhead honesty, and why verge parking is not a third option.

  • Name Eastern, Central or Western Lookout as Plan B before you leave Albany.
  • A full mountain lot is not a reason to park on vegetation or block Bluff Knoll Road.
  • Trailhead lookouts still count if you can park legally. The unmarked Ridge Walk is not Plan B.

Perth is not a day trip to Stirling Range

Best for: People who still think this is a Perth afternoon

Why 4.5 hours each way plus a Grade 4 peak is a fatigue drive, and why Albany or a booked camp is the operating layer.

  • Last town fuel, supermarket and hospital-scale medical: Albany (Mount Barker on the western side).
  • Sleep in Albany, Mount Barker, a boundary commercial camp, or booked Moingup Spring. Perth is overnight country.
  • A full park day from Albany is the honest clock. A Perth same-day return is not.

Toolbrunup Peak in the Stirling Range, Western Australia, March 2007

· ~12 min read · Plan B · Toolbrunup · Walking

Toolbrunup is not Bluff Knoll

Best for: People swapping peaks because Bluff Knoll is busy or “only 4 km”

Shorter kilometres, harder walking: why 4 km of scree and scramble is not a condensed Grade 4, and when to pick Trio instead.

  • Trails WA lists Toolbrunup as Class 5 / extreme. Believe the scramble, not the shorter distance.
  • Turn around before the scramble if confidence or wet rock is wrong. That is a successful day.
  • If you wanted steps and mountain bells, Mount Trio is the closer substitute — not Toolbrunup, not the Ridge Walk.

Hypocalymma speciosum on the Bluff Knoll walk, Stirling Range National Park, October 2019

· ~11 min read · Plan B · Wildflowers · Season

Wildflower season is not a guaranteed week

Best for: Spring trips, photographers, people booking Moingup for “peak bloom”

October–December is the planning window for mountain bells and heath colour — not a live bloom forecast, and not a reason to leave the track.

  • Plan October–December for the best odds. Confirm recent local and official notes the week you travel.
  • Stay on tracks. Dieback and trampling are how visitors damage the thing they came to see.
  • A lookout morning on Stirling Range Drive still counts if a peak is in cloud.

Coyanarup peak, Stirling Range National Park, Western Australia

· ~12 min read · Plan B · Ridge Walk · Safety

The Ridge Walk is not a casual multi-day

Best for: People who saw “26 km, 2–3 days” and thought it was a marked trail

Unmarked wilderness, no reliable water, fatalities and rescues: why Ellen Peak to Bluff Knoll is not a longer Bluff Knoll, and what to do for two days instead.

  • Contact rangers / Albany District before you even treat this as on the table. Register off-trail parties.
  • No reliable water. PLB. Navigation. Self-reliant first aid. Fatalities and costly rescues have occurred.
  • Operator two-day: Moingup or a town bed plus marked peaks. That is the substitute.

Bluff Knoll with a cloud blanket, Stirling Range, Western Australia

· ~11 min read · Plan B · Dieback · Weather

Dieback and summit weather are the real park rules

Best for: Anyone packing for a Stirling peak or a wildflower lookout morning

Stay on tracks, clean boots, pack layers: Phytophthora and rapid peak weather fail more Stirling days than the entry fee does.

  • Stay on marked tracks. Clean boots before and after. Off-track flower photos are how dieback moves.
  • Pack a warm layer and a shell even in summer. Mist, wind, rain and hail are ordinary on the peaks.
  • Extreme fire-danger days: do not enter the bush or use footpaths. Confirm live on Emergency WA and alerts.dbca.wa.gov.au.
