Albany and the last-town layer
Guide updated · not walked — verify Explore Parks WA / DBCA
Albany is about 80 km / 1–1.5 hours south of the range — last reliable supermarket, hospital-scale medical, fuel and beds for most visitors. Mount Barker is closer on the west. Perth is 4.5 hours and not a day-trip.
- Best for: Sleep, fuel, water, food, medical, screenshots of alerts — then a park day with a reverse clock
- Time: Overnight in Albany (or Mount Barker / boundary camp) plus a full park day. Not a Perth afternoon
- Albany → Chester Pass Road north to the park. Perth → Albany Highway then east toward Cranbrook / Chester Pass — ~400–405 km / ~4.5 hours. Sealed to Chester Pass; Bluff Knoll Road to the entry station. Stirling Range Drive unsealed.

The operating layer is Albany, not Perth
Stirling Range National Park sits in the Great Southern, the only major mountain range in southern WA, about 65 km east–west. Albany is the usual last town: roughly 80 km / 1–1.5 hours. Trails WA quotes about 85 km / 1 hour on Chester Pass Road. Mount Barker is the other real supermarket town for the western approach. Not walked.
Perth is about 400–405 km / 4.5 hours. That is an arrival day, not a summit sandwich. See the Plan B article. Official-before-money: alerts.dbca.wa.gov.au and Emergency WA the morning you leave town, not from a lookout with no signal.
What town is for
Fill water, fuel, food, medication, first aid and a power bank in Albany or Mount Barker. Download Smart Park Maps / Avenza, Emergency+, and screenshots of Explore Parks, Park Stay and alerts on town Wi-Fi. Mobile is limited in the park. 000 needs reception.
Cranbrook, Gnowangerup, Borden and Amelup are useful on a map and thin on a Sunday night. Do not treat them as Albany. Porongurup is a nearby park and village, not a Stirling substitute.
Where to sleep
In-park public camping: Moingup Spring only, Park Stay, seven sites, no drinking water. Boundary commercial: Stirling Range Retreat and Mount Trio Bush Camp — private, not DBCA camping. Everyone else: Albany, Mount Barker, or other towns. Booking.com-style stay widgets belong on town cards, not on trail pages. This guide never affiliates official camping or entry.
How long you actually need
From Albany: a full day for Bluff Knoll done well, or lookouts plus one short peak. A half day is lookouts and picnic only. Two days if you want Toolbrunup or western peaks without rushing. Wildflower weekends want two nights if you can. Families who skip summits still need the Albany reverse before dusk wildlife and fatigue.
Last town by intent — fuel, food, medical
Day trip from Albany: fill fuel and drinking water in town even for a “just lookouts” visit. The park does not replace a supermarket. Hospital-scale medical is Albany. Mount Barker is the closer western supermarket and fuel town — still not a substitute for Albany Hospital if that is the plan.
Overnight / camp: carry all Moingup drinking water from town. Pack out rubbish. If Moingup is sold out, Albany or Mount Barker beds or a commercial boundary camp — not a bush camp invent. No invented prices on this page.
Cranbrook, Gnowangerup, Borden and Amelup are useful on a wheatbelt loop. They are the wrong dawn base if Bluff Knoll is the whole product and you needed a chemist at 7 pm.
Do the comms work in town
Official materials promote Smart Park Maps / Avenza because mobile reception is limited or absent in parts of the park. Screenshot alerts.dbca.wa.gov.au, Explore Parks, Park Stay and Emergency WA on Albany or Mount Barker Wi-Fi. Download Emergency+. 000 needs reception.
A PLB is a realistic extra for Bluff Knoll, Toolbrunup and any ridge travel. We do not publish carrier maps and we do not require a specific satellite brand. Leave a trip-intentions form with a responsible person — Explore Parks links the PDF.

- Screenshot alerts and offline maps before Chester Pass.
- No dogs in the park — leave them in town with a real arrangement, not a hidden crate.

Full day from Albany (1–1.5 hrs each way + 3–4 hours on the walk)
Bluff Knoll day: summit if the mountain allows
The usual serious first day: early Chester Pass drive, pay at the entry station, Grade 4 summit from the south side of the trailhead, reverse with daylight. Lookouts are Plan B if the lot is full or the weather turns. Not a Perth day-trip.
Half to full day from Albany
Family lookouts: picnic, Drive, no summit required
Wheelchair-accessible lookouts and picnic at the Bluff Knoll trailhead, then Stirling Range Drive (Eastern, Central, Western) if the unsealed road is civil. No summit. No scramble. No Ridge Walk jokes.

Perth is not a day trip to Stirling Range
Why 4.5 hours each way plus a Grade 4 peak is a fatigue drive, and why Albany or a booked camp is the operating layer.
Bluff Knoll car park full — what now
Plan B when the Bluff Knoll mountain car park is full: Drive lookouts, trailhead honesty, and why verge parking is not a third option.

FAQ — Albany gateway
Tap a question to expand the answer.
Can I day-trip from Perth?
No. About 4.5 hours / 400–405 km each way. Sleep in Albany, Mount Barker, a boundary camp, or booked Moingup Spring.
How far is Albany?
About 80 km / 1–1.5 hours. Confirm your own map for the exact trailhead.
Is there public transport?
No practical public transport into the park. Private vehicle or a commercial tour — confirm the operator’s walking time.
Where is the last supermarket / hospital-scale medical?
Albany. Mount Barker covers a lot of food and fuel on the western side. Emergencies: 000 (needs reception) and Emergency+.
Is Mount Barker enough instead of Albany?
For a dawn western-Drive or Toolbrunup start, yes as a bed and fuel town. For hospital-scale medical and a full supermarket reset, Albany is the last-town layer. Neither is Perth.
Can I stay at Amelup / Borden?
Smaller northern localities exist. Do not treat them as Albany services. Search nearby towns on the Stay hub. Boundary commercial camps are not Park Stay.
