Stirling Range National ParkUnofficial operator’s manual

Eastern peaks / Ridge Walk country

Not a casual precinct. Unmarked Wilderness Zone between Ellen Peak and Bluff Knoll. Overview and warnings only. Experienced parties contact rangers. Almost everyone should use marked day walks instead.

  • Best for: Experienced remote walkers after a ranger conversation — not first-timers, not families, not “multi-day Bluff Knoll”
  • Time: 2–4 days if you are actually that party. Otherwise: zero — pick a marked peak
  • There is no signed tourist drive to a Ridge Walk start gate aimed at casual visitors. If you need directions from this page, this is not your walk.

Why this area page exists

So the Ridge Walk is not silently attached to Bluff Knoll as if it were a longer way down. Trails WA and Explore Parks treat off-trail / wilderness travel as a registered, experienced-party activity. This unofficial operator’s manual follows that. Not walked. Not a route card.

Contact Stirling Range National Park rangers or Albany District. Register at the shelter opposite the Bluff Knoll Road entry station. Confirm live on Explore Parks WA / alerts.dbca.wa.gov.au. Read the trail overview and the Plan B article.

What to do instead

Marked peaks: Bluff Knoll, Toolbrunup, Trio, Hassell, Magog, Talyuberlup. Overnight: Moingup Spring on Park Stay, or a boundary commercial camp, or Albany. Two-day peaks itinerary is the operator multi-day. The ridge is not that.

What the Ridge Walk actually is

Unmarked / informal cross-country through the Wilderness Zone. Variants are often quoted around 15–26+ km one way (Trails WA cites about 26 km Ellen Peak to the Bluff Knoll car park). Two to four days for fit experienced parties. Extreme difficulty, no reliable water, rugged terrain, changeable weather. It is not a marked trail.

Official advice: contact Stirling Range National Park rangers or Albany District beforehand; register; carry a PLB; experienced, agile hikers only. Fatalities and costly rescues have occurred on long ridge treks. This unofficial guide will not give waypoints, water caches or a “you’ll be fine” clock.

Who must not go

First-timers. Families. Anyone who found Bluff Knoll Grade 4 a stretch. Anyone without navigation, a PLB, a trip-intentions form and a person in town who will raise the alarm. Anyone on an extreme fire-danger day. Anyone treating the ridge as a longer way down from the summit because the weather looked pretty.

If you needed this page to decide, the decision is the two-day marked-peaks itinerary or a single summit plus Drive lookouts.

Registration, water, comms

Established day walks need no registration. Off-trail, abseil and climb: register at the shelter in the picnic area across the road from the Bluff Knoll Road entry station. That picnic is not the mountain car park. Albany Parks and Wildlife Office is listed on Trails WA as 08 9842 4500 — confirm live; this site does not publish a mailbox.

No reliable water on the ridge. Carry what a remote party carries. Reception is limited or absent — 000 needs reception. Emergency+. Offline maps. PLB is not optional flavour for this precinct.

FAQ — Ridge Walk country

Tap a question to expand the answer.

Is the Ridge Walk marked?

No. Unmarked cross-country through a Wilderness Zone. Not a managed route.

Do I register?

Yes for off-trail walking. Established day walks do not require registration. Shelter opposite the Bluff Knoll Road entry station. Contact rangers / Albany District in advance.

Can I just continue from Bluff Knoll summit?

No as a casual extension. The Ridge Walk is unmarked wilderness, not a longer Grade 4. Reverse the marked trail.

Is there water?

No reliable water. Official and Trails WA framing is self-reliant remote travel. Do not invent soaks from a blog.

What should I do instead?

Marked peaks and, if you want an overnight, Moingup Spring on Park Stay or a town / boundary bed. See the two-day peaks itinerary.
