Plan your visit
If you only open one planning page, make it this one. A good Stirling Range day is logistics plus restraint: sleep in Albany, Mount Barker or a booked Moingup site, treat Bluff Knoll as the default peak (not a casual lookout), have Toolbrunup or the scenic drive as Plan B when weather or fitness fails, and do not invent a Ridge Walk onto a first visit. Vehicle entry is not camping.
Independent unofficial guide. We never invent open/closed claims. No dogs. No campfires. Carry water. Download Emergency+ — 000 needs reception. Not walked for this date.

Pick a day shape (before you leave Albany)
Most failed Stirling visits are not “bad weather” — they are overstuffed plans: a Perth departure, Bluff Knoll at midday heat, then Toolbrunup because a list said don’t miss it. Choose the shape that matches energy, bookings and group honesty, then open the matching itinerary. You can always do less on the ground; you cannot invent daylight on Chester Pass.
Albany day-trip
Early Chester Pass drive. Bluff Knoll if weather and fitness hold, or lookouts + Stirling Range Drive if they don’t. Reverse with daylight.
Albany day-trip plan →
Overnight at Moingup
Park Stay booked. Bring all drinking water. Cooler morning for Toolbrunup or a second marked peak — not the Ridge Walk.
Two-day peaks plan →
Family / mixed ability
Wheelchair-accessible lookouts and picnic at the Bluff Knoll trailhead. Scenic drive if the unsealed road is civil. Hard no on Toolbrunup scramble.
Family lookouts plan →
Bluff Knoll focus
One Grade 4 mountain. Allow 3–4 hours return plus weather buffer. Do not stack Toolbrunup the same afternoon.
Bluff Knoll day plan →
The Ridge Walk is a different product (unmarked wilderness, experienced parties, ranger contact) — not a first mixed-group upgrade: Ridge Walk article · all itineraries · park areas · trails · Perth clock.
How long do I need?
From Albany the drive is typically about 80 km / 1–1.5 hours each way on Chester Pass Road. Perth is about 400–405 km / 4.5 hours each way — a different trip, not a same-day summit. People who should not attempt this park as a Perth day-trip: anyone leaving after a late breakfast and still hoping for Bluff Knoll, Toolbrunup and a daylight reverse.
| Shape | On the ground | Honest calendar | Who should not |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 hours | Trailhead lookouts + picnic, or a short peak (Talyuberlup / Mount Trio) if fitness holds | Works from Albany; not from Perth | Anyone stacking Bluff Knoll plus Toolbrunup |
| Half day | One marked peak, or Stirling Range Drive with lookouts | Leave Albany with buffer for weather turnaround | Wet-weather Toolbrunup scrambles |
| Full day | Bluff Knoll (3–4 hrs on trail) plus one lookout, or Toolbrunup only | Protect a reverse clock to Albany or camp | Groups adding the unmarked Ridge Walk |
| Overnight | Moingup camp (booked) or Albany / Mount Barker bed | Buys the cooler morning that makes a second peak honest | Walk-up camping with no Park Stay booking |

When to go
There is no single “best month” — only trade-offs between bloom, heat, mist, fire danger and whether you can book Moingup’s seven sites. Peaks here change faster than Albany’s forecast. Check Emergency WA and alerts.dbca.wa.gov.au the morning you leave.
- October–December (wildflower window): mountain bells, orchids, heath — bloom is a season, not a guaranteed week. Bluff Knoll lot fills. Stay on tracks (dieback). See the wildflower weekend plan and timing article.
- Autumn: often cooler walking, quieter lots some days. Still pack a shell — mist is the range’s name (Koi Kyenunu-ruff).
- Winter: cold, wet, misty; occasional summit snow; some crisp days. Layers and a hard reverse clock. Not a first Toolbrunup scramble in the wet.
- Summer: hot and exposed on ridges. Skip Total Fire Ban / extreme fire-danger days — do not enter the bush or use footpaths. Confirm live; do not treat a green spring memory as gospel.
- Weekends and school holidays: Bluff Knoll fills. Name Drive lookouts as Plan B before Albany. See parking.
Fees — three separate systems
Fees change; confirm on official DBCA / Park Stay pages and park alerts. This site never sells park entry or camping.
A. Day vehicle / park entry
Planning figures from the WA fee-park table (confirm live on park-entry-fees): standard vehicle ≤12 $17; concession $10; motorcycle $10; large vehicle >12 $8 pp (concession $3.50). Walk-in / cycle-in typically no vehicle fee. Covers this and most other fee parks the same day (exceptions exist elsewhere). Campers pay entry only on the first day of a stay. Passes (Holiday / Annual / South Coast group) are entry only — not camping. Display in vehicle. Pay at the Stirling Range Entry Station (Bluff Knoll Road off Chester Pass Road), with a camping booking, or via shop.dbca.wa.gov.au.
B. Camping (Park Stay)
Book parkstay.dbca.wa.gov.au. Moingup Spring: seven unpowered sites. A per-person camping fee plus a separate vehicle entry fee apply. Camping is paid by card at booking. The public camping-fees page does not list a Stirling dollar table — pay the live Park Stay amount. No drinking water. Never affiliated.
C. Walk permits
No general permit for marked day walks. Register at the picnic-area shelter opposite the entry station only for off-trail hiking, abseiling or rock climbing. Ridge Walk / Eastern Peaks: contact rangers / Albany District in advance; experienced parties only; PLB strongly advised.
- No dogs anywhere. 1080 baiting is ongoing — poisonous to humans, dogs and cats. Assistance animals: official DBCA wording only.
- No campfires. Moingup generator windows 10am–1pm and 5pm–8pm only.
- Dieback (Phytophthora): stay on marked tracks; clean boots at trailheads. Off-track flower steps are how the heritage listing gets damaged.
- Drones and special activities follow on-site signs and official policy — do not assume yes.
- Confirm live on the official park page and alerts.
Camping — Moingup Spring only
In-park nights are Park Stay WA only — Moingup Spring (seven unpowered sites, reopened November 2025 after a bushfire rebuild). Vehicle entry is a separate fee. This site never affiliates camping bookings or park entry. Flush toilets, food-prep shelter with gas stove, dishwashing, picnic tables, sheltered gas BBQ in adjacent day-use. No drinking water. No fires. No dogs. Generators 10am–1pm and 5pm–8pm. Pack out. No bins. 180-day booking window — confirm live on Park Stay.
Book official only
Use Park Stay WA only. Pay the live camping total — this site does not copy a Stirling dollar table. Walk-up is not a product if the seven sites are sold.
Park Stay WAWhat you must bring
All drinking water from Albany or Mount Barker. Rubbish bags. Warm sleep layer (Great Southern nights). Screenshot of the booking. One site per booking — not a second bay on vegetation.
When Moingup is full
Albany, Mount Barker, or a boundary commercial camp (Stirling Range Retreat / Mount Trio Bush Camp — private, not DBCA). Do not wild-camp.

First-day plan (what to do first)
If you only remember one filter: one primary peak per day for most mixed groups. The high-satisfaction product is Bluff Knoll (or Drive lookouts if the lot or weather fails). Toolbrunup is a different morning. The Ridge Walk is not day one.

Bluff Knoll track
Stephen Edmonds · CC BY-SA 3.0 · Wikimedia Commons
- Night before: fill water and fuel in Albany or Mount Barker. Screenshot alerts and Emergency WA. Download Emergency+ and an offline map (Smart Park Maps / Avenza). Name Plan B out loud: Drive lookouts if the mountain lot is full.
- Chester Pass north: about 80 km. Pay or display vehicle entry at the Stirling Range Entry Station on Bluff Knoll Road. Do not skip the station for “just a photo.”
- Trailhead honesty: if the lot is full, leave for Eastern Lookout. If you have a bay: toilets, layers, then the south-side Grade 4 — or picnic lookouts if the party is not a peak party.
- One extra only: Eastern Lookout after a successful reverse, or nothing. Toolbrunup only if you did not already spend 3–4 hours on Bluff Knoll and the rock is dry.
- Protect the reverse: daylight on Chester Pass. Camp only if Park Stay is booked. Do not invent a Ridge Walk from the summit.
Deep guides: Bluff Knoll trail · car park Plan B · Albany day itinerary · things to do.
Map (orientation only)
Mental model: Chester Pass Road north from Albany → Bluff Knoll Road to the entry station, picnic and icon trailhead → Stirling Range Drive (~42 km, mostly unsealed) for Eastern / Central / Western Lookout → western peaks (Toolbrunup, Trio, Hassell, Talyuberlup) on short unsealed spurs. The Ridge Walk is not a drive-to lookout.
Not a navigation substitute. Download official / Smart Park Maps for offline use. Coverage is patchy. Park boundaries on web maps are approximations.

Getting there from Albany (not Perth)
Primary: private vehicle from Albany (~80 km / 1–1.5 hours north on Chester Pass Road) or from Perth (~400–405 km / 4.5 hours) as an arrival day, not a summit day. Bluff Knoll Road turns off Chester Pass to the entry station, picnic area and trailhead. Stirling Range Drive is about 42 km through the heart of the park, mostly unsealed but graded. Other trailheads use short unsealed spurs. No public transport. No ferry.
By car (default)
- Albany → Chester Pass Road north → Bluff Knoll Road to the entry station.
- 2WD to the Bluff Knoll trailhead in ordinary conditions. After rain, treat the Drive and Toolbrunup spur as high-clearance until you see them.
- No in-park bowser — fill in Albany or Mount Barker.
- Hard “leave the park by” time so Chester Pass at dusk is not a wildlife surprise.
- Perth same-day return is a fatigue drive, not a highlights day — see the article.
Without a car
- No bus into the park. Do not assume a tour drops you at the Bluff Knoll summit path.
- Most walk plans assume a vehicle. A guided Albany day can handle driving — it still does not replace alerts or a Grade 4 decision. See tours.
- Sleep Albany the night before. A Perth landing plus a same-afternoon peak is how you buy a full lot and a dark reverse.
Gateway: Albany gateway area · Where to stay · Perth is not a day trip.
Parking, peak days & Plan B
Bluff Knoll’s mountain lot fills on weekends, school holidays and in the October–December wildflower window. A full lot is a Plan B moment, not a reason to invent verge parking. This is Stirling-specific — not a generic “arrive early” cliché.
- Name Eastern / Central / Western Lookout as Plan B before you leave Albany.
- Do not block Bluff Knoll Road, wait on the verge, or park on heath.
- Never leave bags visible at trailheads.
- Moingup camp bays are not day-use overflow for the summit.
- The Ridge Walk is not overflow hiking. Toolbrunup is not overflow hiking unless you packed for scree.
Phone coverage
Official materials promote Smart Park Maps / Avenza geo-referenced offline maps specifically because mobile reception is limited or absent in parts of the park. We do not publish carrier maps and we do not require a specific satellite brand. 000 needs reception. Download the Emergency+ app in Albany so a phone can still store GPS. Screenshot alerts on town Wi-Fi. Leave a trip-intentions form with a person who will notice if you are late.
A PLB is a realistic planning step for Bluff Knoll, Toolbrunup and any ridge travel — not a fashion item for a picnic at the trailhead. Official notes ask visitors to consider one for serious walking. It is not a substitute for a turnaround plan.
Weather, safety, operating layer
- Peaks change fast: cool change, rain, hail, wind, mist near zero visibility. Carry layers even on a warm Albany morning.
- Steep steps, scree, rock scramble near some summits; exposure increases with altitude.
- Bushfire: do not enter the bush or use footpaths on extreme fire-danger / Total Fire Ban days. Check Emergency WA / alerts.
- 1080 baiting ongoing. No dogs. Dieback — stay on marked tracks, clean boots at trailheads.
- No crocodiles. Snow is occasional, not reliable. Heat and sudden cold are the practical extremes.
- Emergencies: 000 (needs reception), Emergency+ app. Leave a trip-intentions form with a responsible person.
Packing baseline
Pack for rapid summit weather and a dry camp. Under-packing is the usual failure after a “we’ll just do lookouts” assumption. Kit searches live on Gear — not as a merch wall on this page.
Lookouts & Albany day
- Drinking water for the whole day (none on lookouts)
- Warm layer + wind/rain shell
- Sun hat + SPF
- Shoes with grip (gravel bays, optional steps)
- Offline map + Emergency+
- Cash/card for vehicle entry (re-check the official table)
Bluff Knoll / Toolbrunup
- 2–3 L water per person
- Grippy shoes (scramble grip if Toolbrunup is on)
- Head torch even for a “day” walk
- First aid + blister care + boot brush (dieback)
- PLB if you own or hire one
- Turnaround time agreed before the ridge or scramble

Where to stay (decision filter)
Moingup Spring maximises a cooler second-peak morning — when you hold a Park Stay booking and all drinking water. Albany is the last-town default (fuel, food, hospital-scale medical). Mount Barker is closer inland staging. Boundary commercial camps are private businesses, not DBCA overflow.
- Official camping: Park Stay only — never affiliated here.
- Commercial gateway beds: Stay hub (Booking.com / CJ links may earn a commission).
- One night in Albany + a daylight reverse is the honest first product. Two days is kinder if Toolbrunup is on the list.
Last town — fuel, food, medical, water
There is no fuel, supermarket or hospital-scale medical in the park. Albany is the operating layer. Emergencies: 000 (needs reception). Albany District Parks and Wildlife is often listed as 08 9842 4500. Verify numbers on official pages. No invented prices.
Families
Last easy food and fuel is Albany (Mount Barker closer, thinner). Trailhead picnic and accessible lookouts are the low-friction product. Do not bargain a summit after lunch.
Early / peak starts
Fill water and fuel the night before a wildflower weekend. Screenshot alerts on town Wi-Fi. Do not count on a park café — there isn’t one on the ridge.
Closest to the icon
Booked Moingup for a second-peak morning. Albany if the booking failed. Cranbrook / Borden / Gnowangerup are thin approach towns, not Albany.

Visit FAQ
Short answers for planning landers. Official fees, alerts and Park Stay always win over any blog — including this one.
Tap a question to expand the answer.
Do I need a park pass for Stirling Range?
Standard WA vehicle entry applies unless you walk or cycle in or hold a valid Parks Pass. Planning figures from Explore Parks WA (confirm live): standard vehicle ≤12 occupants $17; concession $10; motorcycle $10; large vehicle >12 occupants $8 per person (concession $3.50). Passes cover entry only, not camping. Pay at the Stirling Range Entry Station on Bluff Knoll Road off Chester Pass Road. We do not sell entry.
Can I camp inside the park?
Yes — one official campground booked on Park Stay WA: Moingup Spring (seven unpowered sites, reopened November 2025 after a bushfire rebuild). No drinking water provided. No fires. No dogs. Vehicle entry is a separate system. Stirling Range Retreat and Mount Trio Bush Camp are commercial boundary camps, not park camping. Never affiliated here.
Do I need 4WD?
No for the core visit. Chester Pass Road is sealed. Bluff Knoll Road is 2WD in ordinary conditions. Stirling Range Drive (~42 km) is mostly unsealed but graded — 2WD when dry; high-clearance helps after rain. Short unsealed spurs to Toolbrunup and other trailheads. No ferries, no tidal crossings.
Are dogs allowed?
No, not anywhere in the park. 1080 baiting is ongoing — poisonous to humans, dogs and cats. Assistance animals: official DBCA wording only.
Is there mobile reception?
Official materials promote Smart Park Maps / Avenza because mobile reception is limited or absent in parts of the park. Without coverage you cannot call 000. Download Emergency+ in Albany. Optional PLB for Bluff Knoll, Toolbrunup and any ridge travel. We do not publish carrier maps.
How long from Albany? From Perth?
Albany: about 80 km / 1–1.5 hours on Chester Pass Road. Perth: about 400–405 km / 4.5 hours each way — not a day-trip. Sleep Albany, Mount Barker or a booked Moingup site.
Do I need a permit for Bluff Knoll?
No registration for established day walks (Bluff Knoll, Toolbrunup and the other marked peaks). Register only if you go off-trail, abseil or rock climb — shelter in the picnic area opposite the Bluff Knoll Road entry station. Ridge Walk parties should contact rangers / Albany District in advance.
What if the Bluff Knoll car park is full?
Leave for a signed lookout on Stirling Range Drive (Eastern first). Do not wait on the verge or park on vegetation. Trailhead picnic lookouts still count if you already have a legal bay. Toolbrunup is not overflow hiking unless you packed for scree.
Can I walk if it is misty at the car park?
Mist at the trailhead often means more mist on the ridge. Pack layers, set a reverse clock, and turn around in a white-out. A saddle or trailhead lookout is still a successful visit.
Where do I start if I have one night in Albany?
Night: fuel, water, alerts screenshot. Morning: Chester Pass, entry station, Bluff Knoll if the party is Grade 4 — or Drive lookouts if not. Reverse with daylight. Do not add Toolbrunup the same afternoon. Use the Albany day-trip itinerary as the skeleton.
Track conditions, fees, hours and closures change. Always verify with Explore Parks WA / DBCA and alerts.dbca.wa.gov.au before you travel.
